Summary

Description

The monument comprises a souterrain of prehistoric date, visible as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies on locally high ground in arable farmland at around 55m OD. It comprises a tightly curved souterrain measuring about 12m in length. A faint, irregular cropmark to the NNW appears indicate the position of an associated building.

Souterrains are semi-subterranean structures generally regarded as having been used for storage in later prehistory. They are generally found in association with the remains of above-ground structures which tend not to produce well-defined cropmarks.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 50m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.
