Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a souterrain of later prehistoric date and associated features represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The features lie in arable farmland at around 70m OD on prominent high ground above a break of slope to the S. The monument comprises a souterrain some 20m long and approximately 2-3m wide, curving from N-SE. A second, narrower, L-shaped cropmark lies adjacent to the N and may well represent a second souterrain.

Other cropmarks include a dense circular feature that may represent the remains of a former timber house associated with the souterrains. The features appear to represent elements of a later prehistoric unenclosed settlement with at least one and probably two large souterrains.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is irregular in shape with maximum dimensions of 125m ENE-WSW by 90m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. The souterrain, and in particular its functional and chronological relationships with other preserved features, will be of importance in elucidating the date and function of this class of monument.
