Summary

Description

The monument comprises an unenclosed settlement of prehistoric date, visible as a series of cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument occupies a low ridge in arable farmland at around 25m OD. It comprises two ring-ditches, each measuring about 15m in diameter, from each of which extends a souterrain some 10m-12m long. A third souterrain lies close to the W.

Ring-ditches such as these have been found on excavation to represent the remains of timber roundhouses of later prehistoric date. Souterrains are semi-subterranean structures generally regarded as having been used for storage in later prehistory. The occurrence of souterrains apparently attached to roundhouses is not unusual and would seem to indicate that they were contemporary elements of an Iron Age farmstead.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 110m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is increased by its proximity to monuments of potentially contemporary date.
