Summary

Description

The monument comprises a ring-ditch house and souterrain of prehistoric date, visible as cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland on the summit of a ridge, at around 100m OD. It comprises a ring-ditch measuring about 18m in overall diameter with the ditch measuring some 2m wide.

A curving linear cropmark, emerging from the E part of the ring ditch and curving concentrically around its NE arc for some 15m, appears to represent the remains of a souterrain. Some 10m to the NE there is a disc-shaped cropmark measuring about 6m in diameter, which appears to represent a further associated structure.

Ring-ditches have been found on excavation to represent the remains of timber roundhouses of later prehistoric date. Souterrains were semi-subterranean cellars of similar date, and are generally found in association with former timber roundhouses.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related deposits may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 70m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is increased by its proximity to monuments of potentially contemporary date.
