Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a fort of prehistoric date surviving as a series of upstanding earthworks.

The monument lies on a prominent ridge at around 200m OD. It comprises the remains of an oval fort measuring some 40m NW-SE by 30m E-W, defined by a stone wall. There are no unambiguous signs of structures within the interior but the irregular surface of the ground may reflect the presence of buried structural remains.

To the NW the fort is defended by a rock-cut ditch some 2m in depth, accompanied by an earth and stone bank approximately 1.5m high and some 26m in length. This outwork divides the SE end of the summit, on which the fort lies, from the featureless NW part.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the earthworks of the fort and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is circular with a diameter of 100m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of later prehistoric defensive settlement.
