Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a palisaded enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The site lies on a locally high area in rolling arable farmland at around 25m OD, some 700m SE of the Lunan Water. The surrounding area is extremely rich in the remains of settlement and economic activity of the prehistoric period.

The enclosure is sub-circular with a maximum diameter of

approximately 55m. There are numerous less well-defined cropmarks in and around the enclosure which may represent the remains of associated structures.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is circular with a diameter of 100m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is greatly enhanced by its association with the wider landscape of prehistoric settlement in this part of the Lunan Valley.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.
