Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement and a pit alignment of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies on a gentle slope, at around 80m OD, on a site with restricted views in most directions. The enclosure is defined by an annular ditch, some 5-6m wide, with a possible E-facing entrance. It measures approximately 60m E-W by 50m. There are less well-defined cropmarks inside the enclosure which suggest the survival of deposits relating to internal structures. Some 40-50m S of the enclosure is a pit alignment running NE-SW, though with a marked kink, for a distance of approximately 40m.

The features appear to comprise elements of a later prehistoric farming settlement which may include further surviving elements not represented by cropmarks. The monument lies in a landscape rich in buried archaeology relating to this period.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is sub-rectangular with maximum dimensions of 190m NNW-SSE by 190m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of settlement organisation and economic practice in the later prehistoric period. The ditches and pit alignment may be expected to contain material relating to the contemporary environment and economy of the site while the enclosure's internal deposits may be expected to yield information on the nature and duration of settlement.
