Description

The monument comprises a substantial mound, used as a burial mound in prehistoric times, visible as an upstanding monument. The monument was first scheduled in 1934, but is being re-scheduled in order to clarify the extent of the scheduled area.

The monument is a grass and tree-covered mound, situated on a crest of slightly rising ground at an altitude of about 65m OD, amongst the back gardens of three houses to the N of Barclay Road. The mound takes the form of a rounded cone in shape. It measures some 25m E-W by 20m N-S and stands c.5.4m high. Although the mound itself may be a natural feature, it has clearly been used as a funerary monument in prehistory. In 1902/3, fragments of an urn and charred wood were found at the centre of its top. These remains may have been associated with a cist burial. Monuments of this type date to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, and may be expected to contain material relating to their mode of construction and use.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to survive. It is bounded by a fenceline on the N, W and S sides (not marked on the current edition of the OS map). This fence is located c.4m S of the northern boundary of Parkview and 20m E of Parkview. The S boundary fence follows the line of that for 32 Barclay Road over some 8m. The remaining length of the S boundary and the E boundary follows the break of slope between the mound and the adjacent garden ground, c.6m from the eastern garden boundary of 30 Barclay Road.

The area to be scheduled is sub-rectangular in plan and measures 26m ENE-WSW by 23m transversely, as marked in red on the accompanying map. The fences are excluded from the scheduling for the purposes of maintenance.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to an understanding of prehistoric funerary and ritual practices. Its importance is increased by its proximity to other monuments of potentially contemporary date.

About Scheduled Monuments

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.

Scheduling is the process that identifies, designates and provides statutory protection for monuments and archaeological sites of national importance as set out in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

We schedule sites and monuments that are found to be of national importance using the selection guidance published in Designation Policy and Selection Guidance (2019)

Scheduled monument records provide an indication of the national importance of the scheduled monument which has been identified by the description and map. The description and map (see ‘legal documents’ above) showing the scheduled area is the designation of the monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The statement of national importance and additional information provided are supplementary and provided for general information purposes only. Historic Environment Scotland accepts no liability for any loss or damages arising from reliance on any inaccuracies within the statement of national importance or additional information. These records are not definitive historical or archaeological accounts or a complete description of the monument(s).

The format of scheduled monument records has changed over time. Earlier records will usually be brief. Some information will not have been recorded and the map will not be to current standards. Even if what is described and what is mapped has changed, the monument is still scheduled.

Scheduled monument consent is required to carry out certain work, including repairs, to scheduled monuments. Applications for scheduled monument consent are made to us. We are happy to discuss your proposals with you before you apply and we do not charge for advice or consent. More information about consent and how to apply for it can be found on our website at www.historicenvironment.scot.
