Description

Circa 1825. 2-storey, 3-bay villa with 2 later piended dormers. On plinth; end pilasters supporting entablature. Recessed timber panelled door between reeded timber pilasters; astragaled fanlight; good outer doorpiece with Ionic pilasters and entablature; blocking course over with central tablet. Moulded architraves to all windows. Central corniced wallhead stack with scrolled brackets; octagonal clay can. Lined and painted stucco.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 2 storeys, attic and basment; 4 bays with projecting square stair tower; large modern box dormers to attic. Modern harl.

INTERIOR: part seen (2003). Common close leading to rear with cornicing and architrave; turnpike stair to 1st and attic floor flats. 1st floor flat with reeded architraves and corner roundels.

UPVC glazing. Grey slates laid in diminishing courses; stone ridge; straight skews; brick end stacks, some circular clay cans.

Statement of Special Interest

This is a typical 3-bay villa enhanced by good, decorative detailing. As noted in 1825, 'At the west end of [Eglinton] Street seven new houses have been built and more are in contemplation: the street is about fifty feet wide on average, and upon the whole, the entrance to Beith from the west has now assumed an elegant and respectable appearance, and bespeaks a thriving community.' The central ensemble of classical doorpiece, architraved window and decorative wallhead stack provide a genteel focal point. The survival of these features is of key importance not only to the building but also to the streetscape itself.
