Summary

Description

Later to late 19th century with possible earlier fabric. Single storey, symmetrical, 5-bay public house with rare and distinctive Classical timber frontage and decorative central wallhead panel. Cill course, cornice, fascia with moulded timber lettering, balustraded parapet with ball finials to outer corners. Panelled timber stallrisers and transom lights. Panelled Ionic-style pilasters and decorative mullions separate bays. 6-panel timber entrance doors to outer bays. Large, central decorative consoled wallhead panel with segmental-arched pediment and fluted pilasters. Moulded horse figurehead and lettering 'ESTABLISHED 1834 TRADEMARK'.

INTERIOR: (seen 2007). Late 1950s internal decorative scheme mostly extant. Two rooms with decorative cornice plasterwork. Suspended timber beams over bar counter. Small hatch bar. Some Victorian decorative etched glass.

Statement of Special Interest

The distinctive Classical style timber street elevation of Rutherford's Bar probably dates to the later or late 19th century although the highly decorative carved panel notes that the Bar was established in 1834. Victorian public houses of quality are now particularly rare and Rutherford's street elevation is of particular interest. It adds significantly to the local streetscape and is a rare surviving example of a type which was once common to Scotland's streets. Internally, the pub retains some interesting Victorian etched glass and it is further distinguished by its almost intact late 1950s internal decorative scheme.

Some earlier listed building records may use the word 'excluding', but if the Act is not quoted, the record has not been revised to reflect subsequent legislation.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
