Description

Earlier to mid 19th century with later additions and alterations. Single storey, 3-bay gabled Tudor gate lodge with projecting porch; flat-roofed addition at rear; lean-to addition to side. Coursed, lightly stugged pink sandstone; sandstone ashlar dressings. Raised base course; moulded eaves course; projecting cills.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: gabled porch advanced at centre with timber panelled door, plate glass fanlight; blind armorial panel and stepped hoodmould centred in ball-finialled gablehead above. Single window in bay recessed to outer right. Gabled bay recessed to left with canted window at ground; arrowslit opening aligned above. Lean-to addition to outer left.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: gabled bay to left with canted window at ground; arrowslit opening aligned above. Blind elevation to porch recessed to outer left. Modern window in flat-roofed addition to outer right.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 1998.

NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: lean-to addition obscuring bays at ground to right; arrowslit opening centred in surmounting gablehead. Flat-roofed addition to outer left.

Modern timber glazing throughout. Grey slate piended and pitched roofs; gablet-coped skews; scroll-bracketed skewputts. Corniced sandstone ridge stack at centre; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALL: low coped sandstone wall partially enclosing site. Squat, square-plan pier.

NOTES: Originally associated with the nearby Maines House (now Chirnside Hall Hotel - see separate list entry). The walled garden, also once associated with the Maines estate, is listed separately.
