Description

Mid 19th century. Single storey, 4-bay cottage with single storey, 2 bay addition advanced to outer right; single storey, 2-bay addition recessed to outer left. Squared and snecked tooled rubble sandstone; lightly droved polished dressings. Raised base course; overhanging timber bracketed eaves. Tooled quoins; tooled long and short surrounds to chamfered openings; chamfered cills.

NE (SOUTH BEACH) ELEVATION: original block with steps to recessed timber panelled door off-set to left of centre; bipartite fanlight; architraved hoodmould to painted, basket-arched surround; king-post truss to bracketed gable breaking eaves above. Narrow window in bay to left; single windows in bays to outer left and right. Regularly fenestrated addition to outer right; part-glazed timber garage doors with square lights to right in addition to outer left.

SW (ESPLANADE) ELEVATION: original block comprising single window centred at ground; bipartite window in bay to outer right; box-dormer above; 3-light canted window in gabled bay to outer left; attic window centred in apex above. Addition to outer left comprising gabled porch to right; single window to left. Addition to outer right comprising patio windows to right; small bipartite window to left.

12-pane lying-pane timber sash and case glazing to front original block; 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case glazing to remaining openings; some uPVC at rear. Graded grey slate roof with fishscale easing-course; replacement rainwater goods. Stop-chamfered apex stacks to central block; wallhead stack to NW; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coped rubble wall to South Beach; taller, rubble wall enclosing site to sides and rear.

Statement of Special Interest

An interesting 'cottage style' seafront dwelling which, despite subdivision, has retained some good details. The basket arched door surround, bracketed eaves, fishscale easing-course and stop chamfered stacks are amongst its most notable features.
