Summary

Description

Three storey tenement, comprising three symmetrical ranges (or single-tenements), dating to around the late 1870s. The tenement is stepped to slope, with each range featuring full-height outer canted windows and an off-centre close door with paired three-light windows above. It is built of polished ashlar sandstone, with incised detail loosely derived from the work of architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson at the first floor.

The ground floor is channelled, the first floor features arched tympana above the bay windows and consoled hoods above the inner windows and there is a blocked cornice at the second floor. The roof is pitched with five chimney stacks and a modern tile roof. The glazing is a mixture of timber sash and case and uPVC replacement.

To the front of the tenements on Stanmore Road there are small gardens, surrounded by low, coped sandstone boundary walls with stone piers.

Statement of Special Interest

149-165 (Odd nos) Stanmore Road (inc boundary walls) meets the criteria for listing for the following reasons:

• The tenements are of a good quality design and construction with distinctive architectural detailing.
• The incised stonework detailing shows the influence of renowned Glasgow based architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, a style that is particular to the city.
• The tenements are not a rare or early example of their common building type, however they are a well detailed example.
• They are part of the early suburban development of Mount Florida which began in the 1870s.
