Summary

Description

A detached, single storey, rectangular-plan, timber-framed and weatherboarded cabbie's shelter or 'rest', built in 1878 as part of improvements to the Broughty Ferry Station cab-stance. It has deep, over-hanging eaves to the principal (east) elevation with angle brackets at exposed rafter ends. To the right of the timber door is a tripartite window with multi-pane upper glazing to the right. The piended roof has a covering of grey slate, with a truncated ridge vent flanked by a pair of needle finials. A flat-roofed timber outshot adjoins the north elevation.

Statement of Special Interest

The Broughty Ferry Cabbie's shelter meets the criteria for listing for the following reasons:

• For its timber construction and detailing that is typical of the building type during this period and because it retains its historic character.
• For its prominent roadside setting beside Broughty Ferry Station, to which it has a direct association. It is in its original location and contributes to our understanding of the building's historic function.
• As a rare survival of a 19th century cabbie's shelter in Scotland.
• For its contribution to our understanding of the transport system which developed in response to the growth of Broughty Ferry as a wealthy suburb of Dundee during the 19th century.

About Listed Buildings

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.
