Circa 1905. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay villa with Elizabethan detailing. Tooled coursed grey granite finely finished to chamfered margins at N elevation; Aberdeen bond granite to remainder. Rough-faced base course; dividing string course; eaves blocking course; stone mullions and transoms to windows.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; deeply chamfered Tudor-arched doorway to penultimate bay to left at ground floor, splayed stone steps surmounted by railings lead to 2-leaf panelled timber door, bipartite window to 1st floor; bipartite windows to ground and 1st floors of penultimate bay to right; tripartite windows to bay to outer right; 7-light canted window through ground and 1st floors of bay to outer left, parapet forming balcony to gabled attic floor, bipartite window set in gablehead.

W ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled bay to left, windows to centre bay at ground and 1st floors, flat-roofed porch addition to ground floor at right, panelled timber door to left return, window above, gableted dormer to attic floor.

S ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

E ELEVATION: boarded timber door to centre bay of ground floor, canted 3-light oriel deeply corbelled out to 1st floor, bipartite window to flanking bay to right, with advanced flue breaking eaves to outer right; ground floor of bay to left advanced with piend roof, windows to returns, possible ingleneuk, advanced flue rising from roof to break eaves.

Predominantly timber sash and case windows with small-pane upper sashes. Grey slate roof with tiled ridge. Coped stone skews. Coped gablehead and wallhead stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: not seen 2000.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps to N, low rough-faced coped granite walls between, stepped rough-faced wall adjoining house to E; coped rubble walls to remainder.

Statement of Special Interest

From the beginning of the 19th century Aberdeen rapidly expanded westwards from Union Street. 9 and 9A Rubislaw Den North is part of the later 19th/early 20th century development W of Queen's Cross. Rubislaw Den North runs almost parallel to Queen's Road (on the site of Skene Road) which was originally surrounded by the estate of Rubislaw. In 1877 Rubislaw Estate was bought by the City of Aberdeen Land Association, who re-aligned Skene Road and sold off the estate in smaller plots. Streets became wider and villas with substantial gardens often replaced terraces. Prestigious architects were often employed to produce bold and unusual designs to reflect the wealth and individuality of the clients. Influenced by the Elizabethan style 9 and 9A Rubislaw Den North is a well detailed villa, the deeply chamfered doorway and delicate oriel window are of particular note.
