Earlier 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 2-bay building with former shop to ground floor (now bar) with remarkable plasterwork interior of 1862 created for Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee. Coursed grey granite. Wide flat-arched openings at ground and narrower entrance door to left. Tripartite piended dormer.

4-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate, end stack with ashlar skew.

INTERIOR: Decorative ceiling plaster panels including floral motifs and mythological scenes. Central stairwell leading to basement with cast-iron balusters.

Statement of Special Interest

No 19 Belmont Street was the former showroom of James Bannochie - 'Plasterers, tile fixers, marble and cement workers, chimney pieces, grate and range makers' and contains a remarkable selection of the type of plaster work which was fashionable in the second half of the 19th century. Customers would have been able to specify their commission and examine the workmanship from the examples displayed in Bannochie's premises. The basement floor had '34 panels representing different terrazzo patterns' at time of original listing in 1984. It is understood by the present occupiers that these are now hidden under the more recent laminate and carpeted flooring.
