Description

Earlier 19th century. 2-storey, gabled, asymmetrical, rambling

L-plan house. Tudor and Baronial details. White painted harl with ashlar margins and dressings; chamfered reveals. Base course, string course. Slender, attenuated pepperpot turrets framing gables. Decorative bargeboards.

SW (GARDEN) ELEVATION: overlooking terrrace, 3-bay main block with later single storey bay to outer right. Gable to outer left advanced, tripartite window at ground, timber bipartite at 1st floor. 2 gabled dormerheaded windows symmetrically disposed in centre bay, door at ground, modern glazed with sidelight to left and rectangular fanlight. Advanced, broader gable to outer right; tripartite window at ground, smaller tripartite at 1st floor, masonry mullions and transoms. Single storey, projecting, canted bay attached to right, bipartite window,

piended roof.

SE ELEVATION: 7 asymmetrical bays. 2-bay single storey block to outer left, bipartite windows; connecting entrance bay recessed to right, steps to door with glazed canopy on cast-iron brackets, window to left. Advanced, full-height, canted bay to right (modern bull's-eye glass), bipartite window at ground of left return, dormerheaded window, bipartite at right return. 3 gables recessed to right, broad gable at centre, windows symmetriaclly disposed at 1st floor, door to ground outer right, window to left. Flanking gables, that to left with window at ground and smaller window at 1st floor; outer right gable enlarged windows at ground and 1st floor. Single storey, advanced block to NE, rear elevation of originial coach house.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: advanced block to right and long wing to left with entrance bay deeply set in re-entrant angle. Full-height, squat, stair-tower, tall stair window (5-lying-pane glazing with border), blank plaque above; small window to left at tower base; candle- snuffer roof, fish-scale slate with deep lead flashing and finial. Entrance to left, door to right with window to left, 4-panelled door, dormerheaded window symmetrically disposed. Advanced gable to left, tripartite at ground, single window at 1st floor. Recessed 2-bay block to right, flat-roofed, link-bay, blocking course, tripartite window recessed above. Gable to left, round-headed door to right, bipartite to left,

window symmetriclly disposed in gablehead. Advanced gabled bay to outer left, bipartite window at gablehead. Rectangular opening punched through on right return to now glazed in garage and storage area. Advanced M-gable block to outer right, conservatory built against W elevation. Window at ground of left and right bay, tripartite window at 1st floor to outer right, 2 window at 1st floor in left gable. Asymmetrical gable to N, right bartizan removed. window at centre ground, window to right with stepped hoodmould (modern glazing).

2 windows to right at 1st floor. Recessed to left, link bay to tower, bipartite window at ground (fixed lying-pane glazing, border glass),

dormerheaded window.

12-pane sash and case windows, plate glass sash and case and lying-pane glazing. Grey slate roof with lead flashings. Decorative diminuative lead conical roofs to bartizans. Corniced ridge stacks with octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

CONSERVATORY: late 19th century, canted conservatory on harled base against NW gable. Timber arcade of tripartite shoulder arched windows, 6 green fixed panes above each tripartite panel. Door to right return, lower panelled with bipartite glazed upper and flanked by bipartite arches; service door at left return. Glazed, half-piend and platform roof.

GARAGE AND STORES (FORMER COACH HOUSE): located to NE. Former court of coach house glazed over forming garage, circa early 20th century. Simple original stable at E, coach door at ground, half-piend, hayloft door at centre. Garage and stores to right and left, boarded, sliding doors with fixed-pane uppers. Glazed roof carried on cast-iron supports.

Statement of Special Interest

The house is shown on the 1st edition map as a basic L-plan with L-plan stable block to NE. The house has been divided into flats. The former lodge to Torwoodhill is listed separately.
