Summary

Description

The monument comprises a standing stone of Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date.

The stone stands at around 250m OD on a site commanding extensive views, particularly to the N. It is some 2.1m high with a roughly triangular base measuring approximately 1.2m by 1.2m by 0.5m, and leans slightly to the W.

Locally known as the Gray Stone, it is the reputed burial place of the Mormaer of Atholl who was killed at the Battle of Duncrub in AD 964. However, the stone itself is likely to be of prehistoric date and probably represents a Neolithic or Early Bronze Age ritual monument.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the stone and an area around it in which traces of associated ritual activity may be expected to survive. It is a circle with diameter of 20m, lacking a chord on the ESE side, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of Neolithic and Bronze Age ritual practice. It may be expected that ritual deposits associated with the emplacement and use of the stone may survive around it.
