Description
A pair of standing stones, 14m apart, situated on the W edge of an arable field 70m NE of Lower Kilchattan farmhouse. The northern one is 2.6m high and 1.5m in girth at the base; the southern one, 3.1m and 1.5m respectively. A small cairn of field stones lies around each stone.
The scheduled area includes both standing stones and a rectangle of ground surrounding them measuring 21m (NW-SE) by 6m (SW-NE), extending on the SW up to but excluding the field fence and extending 3m from the standing stones on the NW and SE respectively, as shown in red on the accompanying plan.
Statement of National Importance
The monuments are of national importance because of their potential for shedding light on ritual and funerary practices in the Bronze Age (c. 2500-600 BC). It is likely that these 2 stones are the remnants of a more extensive group, the character of which could be further elucidated by excavation.
