Summary

Description

The monument is an enclosure of the Iron Age situated on top of a rocky knoll between Brotherstone Hill and Brotherstone Hill South. The enclosure is oval in plan and measures c. 50m E-W by c. 45m transversely overall. The enclosing bank is low and narrow to the NW (towards the top of the knoll) while to the S and SE it survives as a broad, low bank of soil and stones. Its position, the size of the bank to the S and SE and slight scoops in the interior, suggest that this is a small settlement. The area to be scheduled includes the enclosure and an area around it in which traces of activity associated with its use will survive.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because it is a well-preserved example of an Iron Age enclosure which has the potential to enhance our understanding of monuments of this type. Its importance is increased by the proximity of many sites of similar date which, taken together, have the potential to greatly increase our understanding of the settlement, economy and development of the landscape in the Iron Age in this area.
