Description
The monument comprises a Roman fortlet, camp and road to the E of the Glasgow to Carlisle railway on the right bank of the River Clyde.
Most of the monument appears as crop-marks on aerial photographs although part of the E side and the SE corner of the camp survive as
low earthworks. The fortlet, which is already scheduled, is
immediately to the E of the Roman road and measures 33.2m NE-SW by
31.4m transversely within a single ditch 1.5m wide and 0.5m deep. It
was partly excavated in 1966. The temporary camp is situated
immediately to the S of the fortlet. Its full dimensions are not
known since only the S and E sides are visible on the aerial photographs. The upstanding remains were investigated in 1970. This showed that the rampart was 2.3m wide and 0.5m high and the ditch was 3.4m wide and 1.1m deep. The Roman road runs to the W of the
cropmarks of the camp.
The area to be scheduled includes the fortlet, the camp, the road and
an area around them within which traces of activity associated with their use may survive. The area is irregular in shape, bounded by
the field boundary to the W and measures a maximum of 400m NNE-SSW by 300m transversely, as marked in red on the attached map.
