Description

18th century with later additions and alterations. Single storey, rectangular-plan former blacksmith's house and adjoining smithy with piended wing to SE forming L-plan. Predominantly harl-pointed sandstone rubble; tooled rubble dressings; painted harl to NE elevation; dry-dashed piended wing.

SE (FRONT) ELEVATION: 3-bay cottage to right with single window at centre; squat single window in bay to left; piended projection to outer right with lower, mono-pitched block to front. Former smithy adjoined to left with boarded timber door in bay to outer right; single window off-set to right of centre; remainder obscured by foliage.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: steeply-pitched gable-end with small, square-headed opening at ground off-set to right of centre (partially blocked). 2-bay piended wing recessed to right with part-glazed boarded timber door in bay to left; timber-mullioned bipartite window in bay to right. Mono-pitched block recessed to outer right.

NW (REAR/STREET) ELEVATION: former blacksmith's house with small single window at centre; single window in bay to right. Former smithy adjoined to right with blocked opening off-set to right of centre.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: steeply-pitched gable-end with single window at ground in bay to right. Lower wing adjoined to left with single window of-set to right of centre.

Various timber sash and case and casement windows; small rooflights. Grey slate roof to former blacksmith's house; sandstone ridging; stone-coped skews. Red pantiled roof to former smithy; stone-coped skews. Brick-built ridge and apex stacks to main block; tall wallhead stack to SE; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Special Interest

No longer in use as a smithy, but partially occupied 1998. Said to be one of the oldest properties in Chirnside village, possibly reaching back into the 17th century. According to the current occupant (1998), none of the smithy's original machinery remains in place.
