Description
This monument is a section of the Antonine Wall which runs along the top of a ridge. Modern houses lie to the SE of this section of the Wall. This proposal forms part of a programme which is intended to update the scheduling of the Antonine Wall.
The Antonine Wall at this location consists of the rampart, the ditch, the berm (area between rampart and ditch) and the upcast mound. The Antonine Wall ditch survives as a pronounced hollow along much of this stretch. The rampart is also well preserved as a raised mound along the central part of this section. To the W the ditch and rampart have been flattened although buried remains are likely to survive.
The area to be scheduled measures a maximum of 298m from WSW to ENE by a maximum of 55m NW-SE, to include the Antonine Wall rampart, berm, ditch and upcast mound and an area around in which traces of activities associated with the construction and use of the Antonine Wall may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract.
The WSW edge of the scheduled area is defined by a property boundary. The NW edge runs across open ground on a line 25m to the NNW of the north margin of the Antonine Wall ditch for 90m before joining the boundary of Ferguston Muir, which it then follows to the E. The E the boundary of the scheduled area follows the W edge of New Kilpatrick Cemetery.
The SW edge of the scheduled area runs 20m S of the S edge of the rampart, to include Roman-period deposits which are likely to survive in this area. The military way may also survive in this area. At its W end, the SW boundary of the scheduled area cuts back closer to the S margin of the rampart, to run only 10m S of it.
Statement of National Importance
This monument is of national importance as part of a major Roman frontier system which has the potential to increase considerably our understanding of Roman frontier policy and military organisation. The Antonine Wall is also the most substantial and important Roman monument in Scotland. The rampart and ditch of the Antonine Wall are very well preserved at this point.
