Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of two circular houses (hut circles) of the Bronze Age set on a natural SW facing terrace. The western house is single walled and measures 15m in diameter. The eastern house is a double walled "Dalrulzian" type with an internal diameter of 9m. The area to be scheduled measures 100m E-W by 35m transversely, as marked in red on the attached map, to include the hut circles and an area around in which traces of activity associated with their use will survive, as marked in red on the attached map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance as the well preserved remains of two dissimilar house types which have the potential to increase our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. They are of particular importance because of the proximity of other monuments of similar date; taken together they have the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of the development and organisation of the prehistoric landscape.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.
