Summary

Description

The monument comprises a sub-circular dun occupying the summit of a ridge. It measures overall 21m NWSE by 18m. The wall's outer face survives to a height of 1m. The area to be scheduled includes ground in which traces of activities associated with the construction and

use of the dun will survive and measures 40m NWSE by 40m transversely as depicted in red on the attached map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because it can give us a greater understanding of Iron Age defensive structures and because the dun, occupying a dominant site, is one of the rare eastern examples of a predominantly western Scottish type of structure which has the potential to increase understanding of the relationship between the disparate peoples of prehistoric Scotland.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.
