Summary

Description

The monument consists of the remains of an oval dun on the top of Drumderfit Hill. It measures overall 17m NE/SW by 11m transversely. The entrance lies on the ENE and appears to have a width of 1 m defined by two stone blocks set on edge. The wall is turf covered; it measures 3.5 m across in the NE and SW and 2.5 m across in the SE. 6 inner wall face stones are visible as are four exterior wall face stones up to 1 m tall. The area to be scheduled is oval and measures 40m NE/SW by 30m transversely as delineated in red on the attached map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because it can increase understanding of the construction techniques of prehistoric fortifications and because it is a rare north eastern Scottish example of a type prevalent in the West and thus has the potential for increasing understanding of the relationship between disparate peoples in prehistoric Scotland.
