Summary

Description

Dated 1797 (Simpson). Large, classifically detailed, quadrangular steading, with 2-stage rusticated ashlar fronted tower and birdcage bellcote over vehicular entrance pend. Square and pinned rubble with rubble base course and granite ashlar dressings.

S range;

S ELEVATION: pedimented tower to centre with ashlar belfry. Tall segmentally arched pend at ground with keystone, Venetian window above. Keystoned Bull's-eye window to corniced pediment, 2-stage belfry with blind bull's-eye to base with rusticated quoins, ogee roof and ball finial to bellcote.

Symmetrical, 2-storey, 4-bay, ranges flanking, with wooden lean-to additions to right. Windows at ground floor, smaller to granery/hayloft, piended roof.

N range;

N ELEVATION: segmentally arched pend to centre with keystone. Flanking ranges detailed as above; modern slapping, and corrugated iron outbuilding adjoining to E.

(COURTYARD): tower with 2 windows at 1st floor, wallhead stack above. Segmental arched cart-arches to E range, larger arch to left with moulded architraves to accommodate missing door. 2 small windows above the hayloft. Cattle courts with modern corrugated iron roof to W range.

3-pane, vertical glazing to 1st floor windows. Grey slates, coped

ashlar stacks; 2 stacks above pend to N.

Statement of Special Interest

According to Simpson, the steading is dated on the belfry; this is now difficult to see. Built by General Duff, who lived at Carnousie Castle 1790-1804, and was "enclosing his mains" in 1792 (OSA). The castle to the E is listed separately.

Some earlier listed building records may use the word 'excluding', but if the Act is not quoted, the record has not been revised to reflect subsequent legislation.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
