Summary

Description

Late 18th century, restored and converted to library 1985. 2 storeys, 2 blocks of 3 bays (formerly 2 buildings). PilasteLate 18th century, restored and converted to library 1985. 2 storeys, 2 blocks of 3 bays (formerly 2 buildings). Pilastered frontage to ground R supporting entablature; 5 bays with central door. Partial wallhead gable with 1st floor and attic window (vent). Regular fenestration with raised and painted margins. Base course; corniced string course between ground and 1st floors to L; moulded eaves course. Painted stucco.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: rebuilt. 2 storeys and basement, 3 bays. Staggered elevation with tall angle windows to R of 3 bays; gabled stair tower to outer L.

Timber sash and case 12-pane glazing to Main Street (replacements). Grey slate roof; straight stone skews with beaked skewputts; rebuilt brick gable stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: open plan library.

Statement of Special Interest

Main Street maintains its mid 18th century narrow streetscape with the buildings following the curve of the road. This is an important example, maintaining its Georgian proportions and traditional materials and contributing to the streetscape. The building was converted for use as Beith Library in 1985; a photograph of 1978 shows the building in a derelict condition prior to this. Initial proposals were to demolish the building and replace with a new one however consent was withheld and the façade and gable were retained, the new library being built behind. Originally two buildings, the bays to ground left consisted of a door and two enlarged shop windows; the right hand side had three central doors flanked by enlarged shop windows. These shopfronts, which have been preserved to a degree on the right, are probably original. The 1978 photograph also shows the central ridge stack between the two blocks and two later dormers (since removed).

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
