Circa 1600 L-plan tower house with 1790 alterations and

baronial rear wing dated 1895. Harled with tooled and polished

ashlar dressings.

3- and 4-storey tower house; stair turret in SW re-entant

angle with corbelled base; similar turret at NW angle;

bartisans at SW and NE. Main entrance door with re-cut

moulded jambs in projecting S stair tower with late 19th

century heavy studded plank door with ornate cast-iron

hinges. Arrow slit vents survive in S elevation; regularised

and enlarged fenestration.

Baronial rear wing with canted bay windows and oriel;

crenellated wallheads; angle bartizan; 2- and 4-pane glazing.

Armorial panel, crowstep gables; slate roofs.

Interior; little survives of original interior except

partially blocked wheel stairs. Circular stair (1790) rises

full height in projecting single bay tower, with turned

wooden balusters, polished wooden handrail and decorative

plaster roundel in ceiling. Fielded panel doors (also 1790)

and marble chimney piece. 1895 interior fittings in later

wing; panelled dados; large wooden staircase with carved

balustrade and newel finials; panelled doors and moulded

door jambs; polished ashlar baronial chimney piece in inner

Traditional seat of the Chisholm family. Thomas Muirison,

Architect, carried out additions and alterations to Erchless

and policies 1814-15 costing $3,060.5.10d for William

Chisholm of Chisholm.

Listing is the way that a building or structure of special architectural or historic interest is recognised by law through the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.

We list buildings of special architectural or historic interest using the criteria published in the Historic Environment Scotland Policy Statement.

Listing covers both the exterior and the interior and any object or structure fixed to the building. Listing can also cover structures not physically attached but which are part of the curtilage of the building, such as boundary walls, gates, gatepiers, ancillary buildings etc. The planning authority is responsible for advising on what is covered by the listing including the curtilage of a listed building. Since 1 October 2015 we have been able to exclude items from a listing. If part of a building is not listed, it will say that it is excluded in the statutory address and in the statement of special interest in the listed building record. The statement will use the word 'excluding' and quote the relevant section of the Historic Environment Scotland Act 2014. Some earlier listed building records may use the word 'excluding', but if the Act is not quoted, the record has not been revised to reflect current legislation.
