Description

A & W Reid, circa 1875. 2-storey, 11-bay W facing hollow

square; all grey rubble with contrasting tooled red ashlar

dressings. Slightly advanced centre bay rises as square tower

single storey above ridge, with blocked eaves, round-

headed louvred windows in each face linked by cill-band

under jerkin-headed dormers, and piended slate roof topped

by small square clock tower with pyramidal slate roof

terminated by cast-iron weathervane. Tall round-headed and

hood-moulded entrance to inner court with pair double leaf

plank doors with decorative cast-iron hinges. Entrance

flanked by 5 regular bays each side, the outer bays slightly

advanced with bipartites in ground and 1st floor; all 1st

floor windows round-headed, linked by cill bands and rising

through wallhead under simple gabletted dormers. Various

farm offices open into inner court, stables, segmental-headed

cart bays and byres, each with title inscribed on lintel or

keystone. Former boiler house/engine house abuts S elevation.

Mainly 4-pane glazing; slate roofs.

Statement of Special Interest

Identification of function of each part of building on door

lintels most unusual. Thus identified are cartsheds 1-7,

implement sheds 1-3, van sheds, 1-2, tool house, meal store,

loose boxes 1-6, pony stable, farm stable, hay loft, harness

room and 2 further farm stables. Some internal alterations

to enlarge dwellings within range. Steading not on 1st ed. OS

1872.
