Early 19th century, with later 19th century addition. Single storey, 3-bay gabled cottage linked to 2-storey, 3-bay, square-plan house with pyramidal roof to rear. Villa with gothic details. Squared and tooled yellow sandstone. Crowstepped gables to corners and porch gable apex. Small plinth blocks at gable shoulders.


S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: base course, moulded cornice clasping porch, blocking course; advanced gabled porch to centre, penticed stone canopy to door and narrow return windows, small pointed arch window above door with moulded projecting cill. Windows with projecting cills to flanking bays. Fleur-de-lys stone finials on plinths.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: abuts main house.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: window to ground at rear and small window to apex, projecting cills.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: window to ground.


S (FRONT) ELEVATION: abuts cottage.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: advanced bay to ground; 2-leaf door to left, picture window to right, door to left return, window to right return; offset square stack with heavily moulded coping to right corner; piended roof. Window to 1st floor. Small gable breaking eaves to centre left with chimney stack to apex.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: regular fenestration to centre and right bay; tall semicircular arched stair window to bay to left; small finialed gable breaking eaves to centre, small window at apex.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: regular fenestration to outer bays; gable breaking eaves with chimney stack at apex to centre.

Modern double glazing. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Paired towering octagonal stacks with heavily moulded coping.

Statement of Special Interest

House name of 'Whitebank' as it stands on the bank of the South Calder to the rear, which is covered in wild garlic in season. Appears to have originally been an estate cottage related to the Allanton estate, like most of Bonkle, which was greatly enlarged into a villa of considerable size later in the nineteenth century.
