Description
Earlier 19th century. Large red brick built rectangular walled garden, with sandstone coping and ashlar dressings to openings; rubble facing to N external wall. Main N entrance widened and heightened 1978. Timber greenhouses to N wall, inside, comprising gabled entrance section to centre, timber pediment above doorway, with ball finial, flanked by stepped, lean-to wings; harled base with teak superstructure. Diagonal slip buttresses to SE and SW exterior angles. N wall extends continuously to E, with variety of single storey and 2-storey lean-to brick and rubble outbuildings on N side, evidence of greenhouses on S side. Square flue vents of wall heating system to N wall exterior.

A Group with Dalmeny House, including Barnbougle Castle, Barnbougle Gate Lodge, Dalmeny House Boundary Wall, Chapel Gate Lodge, East Craigie Farmhouse, East Craigie Gate Lodge, Edinburgh Gate Lodge, Dalmeny House Gardener?s Cottage, Dalmeny House Home Farm Laundry, Leuchold, Leuchold Gate Lodge, Longcraig Gate Lodge, 1, 2, 3 and 4 Long Green, Newhalls Gate Lodge and Dalmeny House Stable Block (see separate listings).
The gardener's cottage is next to the walled garden, to the E (see separate listing). The walled garden and the greenhouse are still in use, and the ridge vents to the latter are operational.
There are various used and unused entrances to the walled garden, the principal entrance being the 2-leaf timber doorway to the E. The gateway to the N has a temporary, modern timber gate, but presumably had a wrought-iron gate.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
