Description

Circa 1830-40, with later alterations. Single storey

and attic, 3-bay house with single-storey, single-bay set

back wings, and further wing to rear. All coursed,

squared rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.

gabled porch with side entrance. Small ground floor

Symmetrical NE facing front; centre door masked by square

projecting porch with side lights flanking entrance and

with crenellated wallhead. 3 later flat roofed dormers,

with painted timber fronts, angle pilasters and dentilled

detailing to moulded cornices; smaller dormer in centre

with decorative multipane glazing. Side wings set back, each

with hood-moulded window and simple blocking course. Some

horizontal glazing survives; elsewhere modern single pane

casements.

3 corniced end stacks mounted on rectangular bases; jerkin

headed slate roof to main house, probably later alteration

from original piended roof (to make larger attic rooms).

Piended slate roofs to wings and to former service cottage

at rear, linked to main house by single rear bay.

Interior; entrance hall with paired Roman Doric columned

screen; simple balustered staircase rises against rear wall

of inner hall. Plain moulded ceiling cornices.

Statement of Special Interest

Built by the Frasers of Gorthleck, now Gorthleck Mains.

Outer bay triple stacks for symmetry only, for they

serve but single fireplace.
