Description

Early 19th century NW facing 2-storey 3-bay house

fronting earlier dwelling, with single storey and attic

gabled wings at right angles, forming rear SE shallow

U-plan court. All rubble, pinned in SW frontage with tooled

and polished ashlar margins and dressings.

Wide 3-bay NW entrance front; centre corniced and pilasted

doorpiece with side lights and 9-fielded panel door.

Wide shallow flanking 3 window bowed bays rise full height

into bowed piended roofs, linked at ground floor by modern

glazed verandah masking entrance.

Centre 1st floor tripartite; long-short quoins; piended

slate roof.

Set back gabled single storey and attic wings project at

SE, flanking mid 18th century symmetrical house of 2 storeys

and attic, 7 bays (outer 1st floor bays probably later

raising). Centre door masked by modern glazed porch.

Roll moulded detailing to doorway and to narrow windows;

4 later 19th century gabletted dormers rise through wallhead.

4-pane glazing throughout; end stacks; slate roofs

Interior; early 19th century original decoration to

entrance hall (NW) staircase and wide landing. Arcade with

reeded columns, stylised acanthus caps and panelled

soffits supports landing; decorative corniced ceiling with

circular and oval panels and centre motifs, painted in

various colours. Decorative cast-iron balustrade with

palmette detailing to staircase and 1st floor landing.

Drawing and dining rooms open off hall with panelled dados

and carved chimney pieces. D-ended drawing room with

recessed wall cupboards. No original features survive in

earlier SE portion of house except draw-bar hole to centre

door.

Statement of Special Interest

Original property of the Fraser family (Frasers of

Lovat). Notable and unusual decoration to entrance hall

and 1st floor landing.
