Summary

Description

Later 19th century. 3-storey, square-plan, piend-roofed water tower with asymmetrically placed slender round-arched openings and letterbox style ventilator at eaves. Coursed stugged ashlar. Raised quoins, and window and door margins.

Timber-boarded entrance door with iron studs; piended slate roof; cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Special Interest

The water tower is unaltered and stands as an important example of an estate building and forms part of a wider group with other buildings on the Hendersyde Estate. It is sited in Tanlaw Wood and accessed off Tanlaw Avenue ' one of the formal walks within the estate, and was built to provide the estate with water.

It dates from the latter part of the 19th century and was probably designed by William Cockburn, who was responsible for many of the buildings on the estate of this period. The stone is from New Quarry, a quarry opened nearby and whose stone was used for many of the estate buildings.

Hendersyde Park was the seat of the Waldie family. Notable family members include Robert Waldie, who was a friend of Sir Walter Scott. Scott was a regular visitor to the Hendersyde and made use of their extensive library. John Waldie was a writer and a bound manuscript of his is held within the 19th century manuscripts collection at Yale University. The original house to the estate was the only mansion in Ednam Parish at the time of the 2nd Statistical Account. It was replaced by the present house in about 1940.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
