Description

HM Office of Works, dated 1910. 2-storey and basement 7-bay L-plan Edwardian Baroque former telephone exchange. Principal elevation red brick with white Portland stone base course, eaves course and cornice, segmental pedimented doorpiece and dressings. White-painted harl to other elevations. 1st floor windows with keystoned surrounds.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: central imposing single bay doorpiece flanked by shallow pilasters surmounted by a pair of consoles supporting a segmental pediment enclosing wreath and festoons. Simple moulded entrance with dentiled cornice. Above, inscription, 'TELEPHONE EXCHANGE' now part-obscured by Royal Mail sign. Above, window with date '1910' at centre of broken cornice. Outer bay to right, at ground, round arched opening with keystone and long and short dressings.

N ELEVATION: blank elevation.

W ELEVATION: to left, 8-bay section with flat-roofed projection at ground, to right, taller advanced section with single bay in re-entrant angle.

S ELEVATION: near-blank elevation.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows with horns. Modern door to E elevation.

INTERIOR: not seen (2004).

Statement of Special Interest

Now a Royal Mail Depot. The former telephone exchange is unusual with its striking colour combination of red and white. The surrounding area has changed considerably over the last 50 years. Cubie Street itself once carried on farther north, but is now severely truncated with the former exchange the sole remaining structure.
