Summary

Description

Circa 1835-40, probably incorporating earlier fabric and subsequently enlarged. 2-storey and single storey with attic and part-basement, 4-bay, L-plan, gabled house with fine interior detail. Part base course. Harled with painted quoin strips and margins; snecked rubble with dressed margins to rear.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3 symmetrical bays to right with later gable to left. Gabled bay to right of centre with panelled timber door under plate glass fanlight and jettied 1st floor with single window; flanking bays each with swept polygonal-roofed canted window breaking eaves into set-back canted dormer window. Gabled bay to outer left with window at each floor.

SE ELEVATION: gabled elevation with window to right at ground and later full-height brick stack projecting at centre.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: asymmetrically-fenestrated elevation with variety of elements including swept-roof stone dormer window abutting gabled bay to approximate centre, and lower projecting bay to right with part-glazed timber door under decoratively-astragalled fanlight and large window at ground on return to left with ancillary building (see below) projecting beyond.

NW ELEVATION: blank elevation with lower pitch-roofed bay to outer left.

4-, 9-, 12-, 16-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. Small grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks, some diamond-aligned, with polygonal cans; plain bargeboarding and overhanging eaves; cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.

INTERIOR: good decorative scheme in place including decorative plasterwork cornices, compartmented ceiling and frieze; black marble, timber and cast-iron fire surrounds, some with cast-iron inserts; panelled timber shutters; cast-iron radiators. Later timber-balustered dog-leg staircase and stair window with coloured margins and etched panes. Hall with part-glazed screen door and partly stone flagged. Inner hall (formerly external wall) with decoratively-astragalled window.

ANCILLARY BUILDING: slated, squared and snecked rubble former wash house converted to dwelling with winding timber stair, timber fireplace and 'Lava' china handbasin by Shanks & Co Ltd, Barrhead, Scotland.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATE: ashlar-coped rubble boundary wall and pedimented pedestrian entrance with timber gate.

Statement of Special Interest

Thought to have been altered to the design of two brothers who also built nearby Loon Brae. The basement is sited below the earliest part and the lounge (ground SE) bears evidence of an earlier (probably external) wall abutting the fireplace.
