Description

Early 19th century with sympathetic later additions. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay (bays grouped original 3-1), irregular T-plan house. Squared rubble and harl addition, random rubble to rear; painted margins and droved squared rubble quoins.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3 bays to left with small gabled porch and 2-leaf part-glazed timber door to centre, windows in flanking bays and regular fenestration to 1st floor, window to each floor in widely spaced bay to outer right.

W ELEVATION: gabled elevation with window to each floor at right, modern conservatory to left and gablehead stack.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: largely blank face to right with window to ground left and adjacent small lean-to porch in re-entrant angle, altered window above. Advanced gable to left with altered window to ground, 2 windows at 1st floor and French window on return to right; further door to narrow recessed bay at outer left.

E (EARNBANK ROAD) ELEVATION: piended elevation with single window to 1st floor and flanking pedestrian gates.

4- and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows; top-opening timber windows to altered openings. Graded grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and some polygonal cans. Shallow eaves overhang with plain bargeboarding.

INTERIOR: good traditional decorative scheme in place with plain cornices and winding cantilevered staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters and timber handrail with decorative fixings.

ANCILLARY BUILDING: slate-roofed, rubble ancillary to NE.

BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: semicircular-coped rubble boundary walls with pyramidally-coped square-section ashlar gatepiers, decorative cast-iron and boarded timber gates.

In 1901 Earnbank House and Garden was occupied by Reverend D M Connell, and owned by Kay MacRosty.
