Description

Dated 1878. Single storey with attic, 3-bay, L-plan, gabled cottage. Boaked crowsteps. Squared and snecked yellow sandstone. Corbelled, half-chamfered quoins. Architraved openings, rollmoulded to reveals, square stopped chamfered cills.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay to right; bipartite, window with stone mullion to ground, framed panel bearing Hamilton of Dalzell arms above, window to gablehead. Original entrance to right return, ogee pediment, carving to tympanum, ball finial partially obscured by flat-roofed, modern timber-framed, storm porch.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: battered wallhead stack to right, window to left.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay; window to ground floor right, rough gadrooning to date panel to left, window to gablehead.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: gabled bay to right, single storey, lean-to addition ; separate single storey piended addition to left.

Plate glass, tilt-and-turn windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Coped stack to N. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2001.

BOUNDARY WALL: bowed garden wall. Squared and tooled yellow sandstone coursers. Gablet coping. Boarded timber door to centre.

GATEPIERS: square-plan columns. Dressed sandstone coursers. Diamond panels incised with ciphers, 'M' and 'G' above string course. Gablet-coped, battered plinths supporting elongated stone pyramids.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We list buildings which are found to be of special architectural or historic interest using the selection guidance published in Designation Policy and Selection Guidance (2019)

Listed building records provide an indication of the special architectural or historic interest of the listed building which has been identified by its statutory address. The description and additional information provided are supplementary and have no legal weight.
