Late 19th century (pre 1897). 2-storey, 3-bay gabled villa with Tudor details. Red sandstone ashlar to principal elevation, harl to sides and rear with ashlar dressings. Base course. Stone mullions and transoms. Mock timber-framing in principal gableheads. Bargeboards.

W ELEVATION: 3-bay, continuous cornice above windows and porch at round and continuous cill course at 1st floor. Advanced gabled bay to right with full-height, 4-light window, mullion and transomed at ground, jettied gablehead on decorative brackets above with timber bipartite window. Porch in

re-entrant angle to centre with segmental opening, roll-moulded and keystoned surround, 3-light heavy stone fanlight above (stained glass lights), cornice and waved parapet above, with carved swan-neck scrolling and corner die; 2-leaf panelled door; architraved oculus to 1st floor above. Bay to left with slightly advanced, full-height 3-light windows, mullioned and transomed at ground, with gablehead at eaves.

N AND S ELEVATIONS: harled with narrow windows, bipartite stair window to S elevation.

Timber sash and case windows with plate glass lower sashes and small-pane upper sashes with decorative stained glass glazing. Timber casement window to principal gablehead. Swept eaves with exposed rafters and grey

slates, decorative clay ridge tiles and finials. Red brick stacks with ashlar sandstone coping and clay chimney pots.

INTERIOR: not seen 2001.

BOUNDARY WALL AND GATEPIERS: red sandstone, squared and coursed, with segmental-headed block coping, walls swept down for railings (now missing) and with central raised section. Square section piers with stone ogee caps to pedestrian and vehicular openings.

Statement of Special Interest

No 34 Wallace Street is akin to works by H E Clifford suggesting that he may have been the architect. The house stands prominently in the burgh, with single storey properties either side. The 2nd edition OS map shows the property set back from the road, unlike its neighbours, evidently replacing an earlier house flush with the road, like its neighbours, as shown on the 1st edition OS map.
