Summary

Description

T Hyslop Ure & Beveridge, 1912. Single storey primary school; rectangular-plan; circular end bays; separate entrances for girls and boys. Stugged and snecked sandstone. Built onto slope, compensated by larger plinth to SW. Base; band and eaves courses; moulded surrounds to windows; advanced cills; ashlar long and short quoins. School bell above right of girls' entrance.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 2 windows to far left; advanced entrance porch to right; central 2-leaf replacement glazed and timber door with fanlight. Single windows flank door; single window in left return. Steps lead to door. Moulded stone doorway surround with keystone; banded rustication and decorative frieze with inscribed central panel 'GIRLS'. Steps lead down to basement door to left; iron railings surround drop. Symmetrical advanced central section with circular outer bays. 3 windows in each circular end bay. Single window to far left and right between circular end bays and 2 advanced gabled sections. 3 windows in each gabled section; central window with cavetto moulding and banded rustication to surround; moulded hoodmould with keystone. Flanking windows with moulded surrounds. Corbelled gable ends; rounded gable apex; diamond-shape panel in gable apex. Central section set back; 2 tall windows breaking eaves; cavetto moulding; banded rustication to surrounds; decorative hoodmould with keystone. Single flanking windows with moulded surrounds to each tall window. 2 windows to left and right returns of central section. Far right section set back with advanced porch entrance for boys; central glazed and panelled door; door surround as with girls' entrance except inscribed 'BOYS'; single windows flank door. Single window in right return. Door to far right.

NE ELEVATION: central tall window breaking eaves course with cavetto moulding; banded rustication to surround and decorative hoodmould with keystone. Stonework advanced below central window. Single windows flank centre window; continuous cill, moulded below.

NW ELEVATION: 4 uniformly placed windows to far left with lugged ashlar surrounds and extending tabs. Coped wallhead chimney to right; band course and raking shoulders to base. Passageway to modern addition to right. 3 windows to right of chimney; taller central window breaking eaves. Lugged ashlar surrounds and extending tabs. Plain wall to central section. Fenestration arrangement and chimney at far left is mirrored to right with extra window to far right. Modern addition to right.

SW ELEVATION: central window breaking eaves course with cavetto moulding; banded rustication to surround and decorative hoodmould with keystone. Stonework advanced below central window. Single windows flank centre window; continuous cill, moulded below.

INTERIOR: tiled entrance. Partially seen, 2000.

12-pane timber sash and case windows with horns and pivoted upper casements to taller windows. Piend slate roof with gabled sections to SE elevation. Flat roofed porches to Girls and Boys entrances. Slated conical roof to circular end bays with ball and spike finial. Rooflights to rear. Wallhead stacks to rear; wallhead stack to SE elevation behind Girls entrance; corniced stack; raking shoulders; circular cans. Corniced ridge stack to right of circular left end bay. Cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.

BOUNDARY WALL

Tall rubble wall to rear; stepped to NE with curved coping and curved coping to SW wall. Low stugged and snecked sandstone wall with railings to front curves to meet 2 pairs of corniced gatepiers to right and left with decorative iron gates.

Statement of Special Interest

B-Group with 6 Dunfermline Road, The Old School House. Limekilns Primary School was built to replace the smaller Pierhead School (later demolished) and remains in use as a school. The school has been little altered since construction. The boundary wall encloses the playground. The portacabins in playground which house the playschool are not part of the Statutory List.
