Description

Mid 19th century. Single storey and attic and 2-storey 8-bay terrace (grouped 2-3-3) comprising 2 houses and bank. Coursed dressed whinstone to principal (NE) elevation; coursed whinstone rubble to rear (SW) elevation; droved sandstone ashlar dressings. Base course and eaves band to principal elevation. Vertical margin and quoins to outer/upper edges of block to principal elevation of Nos 1-3 (whinstone quoins to rear). Coped skew putts. Long and short surrounds to windows; projecting cills.

NE ELEVATION: entrance with long and short surrounds to left of No 5. 6-panel timber door with 3-light rectangular fanlight. Window to right; pair of gabled dormers to attic above. Architraved entrance with flat hood supported on brackets to right of No 3 (bank); 2-leaf 6-panel timber door with rectangular overlight. Window above and 2 to left to each floor. Central architraved entrance with flat hood supported on brackets to No 1; 4-panel door with rectangular fanlight. Window above and flanking windows to each floor.

SW ELEVATION: 2 windows to each floor to rear of No 1 (that to bottom right with cast iron grille); irregular fenestration to rear of No 3 (bank); pair of windows with cast iron grille to right of ground floor; pair of smaller windows of different sizes both with cast iron grilles to left (that to right formerly an entrance); flanking windows to 1st floor with smaller window in between. 3-light window (probably inserted) with wide stone mullions to right of rear of No 5; window to left; 2 gabled dormers to attic above.

SE ELEVATION: adjoins No 7 Mid Row.

NW ELEVATION: adjoins Lauder Town Hall.

Mainly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roofs. 4 coursed whinstone ridge stacks with droved ashlar quoins/outer faces, including gablehead stack to SE of No 3 and shared stack with Town Hall; mainly octagonal quoins.

Statement of Special Interest

B Group with 7 Mid Row and Lauder Town Hall (see separate list descriptions) as forming a prominent and complete terrace at the centre of the burgh. The property has a largely intact well constructed mid 19th century principal (NE) elevation. The Bank of Scotland now occupies the E ground floor bay of No 1.
