Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey and basement, 3-bay villa. Coursed rough-faced pale grey granite finely finished to margins of SE elevation; Aberdeen bond granite rubble to remainder. Darker grey basement floor; base course; dividing band course, moulded to SE elevation; eaves course; overhanging eaves.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical; architraved and pedimented doorway to centre bay of ground floor, panelled timber door with decoratively leaded fanlight above; rectangular-plan windows advanced to basement and ground floors of flanking bays to left, bipartite windows to basement floor, tripartite to ground floor, with narrow windows to returns. Pilastered and entablatured windows to 1st floor, single window to centre, flanked to left and right by round-arched tripartite windows.

NE ELEVATION: Aberdeen bond rubble to ground floor; Aberdeen bond ashlar to 1st floor; gabled to centre.

NW ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

SW ELEVATION: Aberdeen bond rubble to ground floor; Aberdeen bond ashlar to 1st floor; gabled to centre.

Predominantly timber sash and case windows with geometrically leaded upper panes. Piended grey slate roof with lead ridges. Corniced wallhead stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

BOUNDARY WALLS: cement faced low granite wall to SE, with granite coping; brick coped rubble walls to remainder.

Statement of Special Interest

In the second half of the 19th century Aberdeen began to expand westwards following the introduction of the granite trade and the expansion of the harbour. Large numbers of villas and terraces were built. 12 Carden Place is a good example of the type of villa which emerged in the second half of the 19th century. Of particular note are the finely leaded upper panes of the windows.
