Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, T-plan house with stylised rugged details. Rough-faced coursed and squared and snecked pink granite finely finished to margins; rock-faced dressings. Projecting cills and lintels; long and short quoins; crowstepped gables with ball finials; eaves course.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled entrance bay to centre, decorative stop-chamfered doorway with impost detail to ground floor, stop-chamfered angle to right, panelled timber door with letterbox fanlight; single pane window with chamfered star surround set in gablehead with projecting cill below; 2-pane window to right return. Tripartite window with stepped hoodmould to ground floor of gabled bay to left; bipartite window to 1st floor; narrow round-arched blind opening set in gablehead. Bipartite window to ground floor of recessed bay to right; gabled bipartite window breaking eaves to 1st floor.

E ELEVATION: symmetrical; canted 3-bay; window to each bay of ground floor; gabled bipartite window breaking eaves to 1st floor with blind slit opening set in gablehead. Rough-faced, coped wall adjoining to outer right with bipartite window, single window and 2 modern garage doors.

N ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; ground floor not seen 1998; bipartite window to 1st floor of gabled bay to left; single window to 1st floor of gabled bay to right.

W ELEVATION: not seen 1998.

Predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. Purple-grey slate roof piended to E with decorative ironwork finial; decorative pattern below ridge; lead ridges; solar panels to S. Coped rough-faced ridge stack to W, shouldered rough-faced wallhead stack to N. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

ANCILLARY STRUCTURE: single storey and attic; squared and snecked rough-faced pink granite former carriage house, converted to domestic use to N of house. E Elevation: modern glazed door to left flanked to right by window; wall adjoining to outer left (see above); skylight to centre of roof. N Elevation: window to ground and attic floors; flat roofed addition to outer right. W Elevation: not seen 1998. S Elevation: ground floor not seen 1998, boarded glazed opening to attic floor. Modern timber framed glazing; slate roof with lead ridge; coped, rough-faced wallhead stack; cast-iron rainwater goods. Interior: not seen 1998.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: 2 square-plan rough-faced granite gatepiers to SE of house with ball finials. Squared and snecked rough-faced pink granite walls to E and S with rough-faced coping.

Statement of Special Interest

The massing, original detailing and working of the granite is similar to that on the Glen Tanar Estate by George Truefitt (see separate listings) and also to Ivy Cottage and Ivy Cottage North in Aboyne (see separate listing).
