Description

1823; later alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay former manse to St Quivox Parish Church. Tooled squared and snecked pink sandstone with polished dressings. Base course; projecting cills; raised margins; eaves course; eaves blocking course.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical; Tuscan-columned doorway supporting entablature with triglyph and roundel frieze, panelled timber door with decorative fanlight, window centred to 1st floor above; shallow canted bays to left and right, window to centre of ground and 1st floors.

NE ELEVATION: 3-bay; asymmetrical; regular fenestration to 2 bays to left, bay to right stepped down, windows off-centre to left of ground and 1st floors, narrow vertical opening to right of ground floor.

NW ELEVATION: window off-centre to left of ground floor of bay to left, window centre to 1st floor above; bays to right not seen 1999.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 3-bay block to right, windows to ground and 1st floors of centre and left bays, bay to right blank; recessed bay to outer left, piend-roofed single storey block advanced to ground floor with single window to centre, window to recessed 1st floor above.

Predominantly 4-pane and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Piended grey slate roof with lead ridges. Shouldered sandstone wallhead stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

BOUNDARY WALL: random rubble boundary wall.

Statement of Special Interest

B-Group with St Quivox, Cottar House (see separate listing). Described by the NSA as "an excellent manse" (p123). St Quivox Manse retains much of its original detailing, particularly unusual are the understated shallow canted bays of the principal elevation.
