Description

Probably 18th century in origin with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay house with lower, 2-storey, full-width range adjoined at rear; further single storey, gabled wing projecting at rear forming near L-plan. Whinstone and sandstone rubble (squared in part to front); red sandstone dressings; whitewashed harl to NE side. Droved sandstone quoins and long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills throughout.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: iron-balustraded stone stair to deep-set, part-glazed timber panelled door centred at ground; 4-pane fanlight. Single windows flanking entrance at ground; single windows in all bays at 1st floor.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: gabled block to right with single window at ground to right; single window at 1st floor to left. Lower block to left with single windows centred at both floors. Single storey wing to outer left.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: gabled projection to outer right with single attic light centred in apex. Taller gable set behind with single window at 1st floor off-set to left of centre; timber door at ground in subsequent bay to left; small opening at ground to outer left.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: M-gabled. Gabled block to left with single windows at both floors to outer left; gabled block to right with small opening at ground to left; bipartite window aligned at 1st floor; single windows at both floors to right. Single storey wing recessed to outer right.

Predominantly 12-pane (some later 4-pane) glazing in timber sash and case windows; small rooflight. Grey slate roofs; stone-coped skews. Corniced apex stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GARDEN WALLS: rubble-coped rubble walls enclosing garden.

Statement of Special Interest

Noted in the OS Name Book as a "...fine, square-built farmhouse with extensive offices and a large farm attached." With much of its original detailing intact, Harelawside promotes interest for its 18th century origins. Rutherfurd's notes a James Murray as farmer here in 1866. That which remains of the original farm steading is set to the NW.
