Description

In style of William J Gray, architect, Coldingham, circa 1870 with later additions and alterations. Pair of symmetrical, single storey with attic, 6-bay ranges (each containing 2, 3-bay semi-detached farm cottages). Each range rectangular-plan with flanking single storey, lean-to additions (porches and coal sheds). Squared rubble to front; heavily-pointed rubble to sides and rear; red sandstone dressings throughout. Long and short droved sandstone surrounds to front openings (tooled at rear); architraved hoodmoulds to front; painted timber mullions; projecting cills (painted in part).

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATIONS: each range comprising single windows flanking centre; bipartite windows in subsequent bays to left and right respectively; lean-to additions to outer left (Nos. 1 and 3) and right (Nos. 2 and 4) with bracketed, corniced canopies surmounting boarded timber doors.

N (REAR) ELEVATIONS: each comprising single windows in both bays flanking centre; blind elevations to lean-to additions to outer left and right.

Predominantly 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; small rooflights. Grey slate roofs; stone-coped skews. Corniced, brick-built apex stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen 1999.

COBBLED PATHS: to front and between blocks.

GARDEN WALLS: coped rubble walls partially enclosing site.

Statement of Special Interest

A well-detailed pair of farm cottages associated with the nearby Ayton Mains Farmhouse (see separate list entry) and virtually identical to the nearby Littledean Farm Cottages (not listed). The date and detailing of the cottages indicate the possible influence of local architect, William J Gray, whose pattern-book like TREATISE was published in 1852. The hoodmoulds, bipartite windows, canopied entrances and overall symmetry bear strong resemblance to Gray's design for Billiemains farm cottages in the nearby parish of Bunkle & Preston (not listed).
