Summary

Description

Late to later 19th century with later alterations. Single and 1 1/2 storey farm complex with domestic and livestock ranges arranged around large internal farmyard; tall square-headed entrance through W (domestic) range; long cart-shed ranged to E; shed and byre ranges to S and N. Detached, small single storey pitched-roofed byre/store sited to N of farmyard. Harled.

W (DOMESTIC) RANGE: W (EXTERNAL) ELEVATION: irregular, 11-bay, grouped 2-3-3-1-1-1 from left. Large farmyard entrance offset to right of centre. Boarded store door at 1st floor in bay to penultimate right. Boarded door at ground with boarded store door above in bay to outer right. Part-glazed boarded door with window in each bay flanking at ground to 3-bay group to left. Part-glazed door with window at each floor in each bay flanking to 3-bay group to penultimate left. Window in each bay at ground with window at 1st floor to outer left in 2-bay group to outer left. E (FARMYARD) ELEVATION: irregular 11-bay. Large farmyard entrance offset to left of centre. Deep-set, part-glazed door in bays 4, 6 and 9 from left. Window at ground in each remaining bay and at 1st floor in bay to outer right. Small boarded store door at 1st floor in bay 10 from left.

E (CART-SHED) RANGE: E (EXTERNAL) ELEVATION: irregular 16-bay, grouped 3-3-6-1-3 from left. Central range of 6 basket-arched cart arches. Square-headed entrance to right. Deep-set boarded door with window (asymmetrically arranged) in each bay flanking forming group to outer right. Deep-set boarded door with small-pane fanlight with window (symmetrically arranged) in each bay flanking forming group to penultimate left. Large boarded sliding door with window (asymmetrically arranged) in each bay flanking forming group to outer left. W (FARMYARD) ELEVATION: regular 7-bay, grouped 3-1-3. Central, large boarded sliding door. boarded door with window in each bay flanking to each 3-bay group to left and right.

N (BYRE) RANGE: N (EXTERNAL) ELEVATION: low, single storey, 2-bay range. Boarded door in each bay to left and outer left. S (FARMYARD) ELEVATION: irregular 7-bay. Boarded door with small-pane fanlight in bays 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 from left. Small window in bay 2. Large boarded door in bay 7 to outer right.

S RANGE: single storey to E; 1 1/2 storey to W. N (EXTERNAL) ELEVATION: blank. S (FARMYARD) ELEVATION: irregular openings.

Variety of glazing patterns including 2- 4- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Variety of roofing materials, including purple slate to W, S and E ranges; corrugated asbestos and iron to N range; grey slate to detached store in farmyard; stone ridges; harled, corniced ridge stacks to W range; harled corniced gablehead stack to detached store; predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: limited access, 1998. Concrete animal stalls lining N range; open timber framed roof.

Statement of Special Interest

An unusually planned farm, being unique on Hoy, its square plan incorporates all necessary agricultural buildings, as well as farm cottages, in a compact space. This original arrangement has remained intact with very little alteration, the impressive range of cart arches to the E are of particular interest.
