Description

Robert Burn, designed 1800, restored after fire damage circa 1995. 5-bay by 6-bay, 3-storey with basement and attic, terraced classical corner tenement. Sandstone ashlar, rustication to ground at principal elevation. Band course between ground and 1st floors and between 1st and 2nd floors, projecting cills, mutuled eaves cornice and blocking course, entrance platts oversailing basement.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 5 bays with round-arched recesses at ground, round-arched entrance with fanlight to centre, windows in remaining bays, regular fenestration above with 4 box dormers.

E (UNION STREET) ELEVATION: 7 bays at ground, recessed bay to left; common stair entrance with tripartite fanlight, remaining bays regularly fenestrated with windows to right blocked for symmetry, regular fenestration to 1st floor above with windows in 3rd and last 3 bays blocked for symmetry, above windows in 3 bays to left, 2 small gablehead windows above.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: adjoining 27 Forth Street exposed gablehead above with small window set to left.

Timber sash and case windows with predominantly 12-pane glazing, grey slates, gablehead stacks with terracotta cans, decorative cast-iron railings.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Special Interest

Originally listed with 1-29 (odd Nos) Forth Street, 41A-45 Broughton Street and 12 Union Street. Forth Street (excluding 4-10), Picardy Place and at least 1-5 Broughton Street, 1-12 Union Street and Union Place were designed by Robert Burn in 1800 for the Commissioners for the Improvement of Manufacturers in Scotland. Building began on the north side circa 1803-1804 and on the south side about 1805. See OEC v 25 p.30.
