Description

Earlier 19th century, lower bothy dated 1835, ice house dated 1842. 2-storey, 4-bay fishing station with ice house below. Tooled rubble, whitewashed, with polished margins. Long and short quoins.

SE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2 windows to 1st floor of 2 bays to left; 2 bays to right advanced, doorway to left of ground floor with lintel dated "1835", stone steps to left of doorway lead up to flat timber doorway breaking eaves to 1st floor, window to ground and 1st

floor of bay to right, window to ground floor and boarded timber

opening to 1st floor of gabled left return.

NE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; M-gabled; modern ramp slopes up from left bay to right, boarded timber sliding door to right flanked to left by painted out opening.

NW ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; 5-bay; concrete porch with steps to left to flat timber door to centre bay; infilled opening to each flanking bay to left; window to each flanking bay to right.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; slate-roofed lean-to entrance to ice house set in hillside, boarded timber door to left, flanked to right by tooled datestone reading "1842", boarded up opening to outer right, 2-pane skylight to slate roof. Window to centre of ground floor, window off-centre to left of 1st floor, protruding ledge set in gablehead.

Predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Corrugated-iron roof and ridge. Cement faced skews. Coped red brick gablehead stack to SW with circular can; corniced pink sandstone gablehead stack to NE. Cast-iron and PVCu rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: 2 chambered vaulted ice house; brick and stone fireplaces.

Statement of Special Interest

This former salmon fishing station is a rare survival, with ice house, upper and lower bothy, skipper's quarters and net store.
